Geci Karuri-Sebina, PhD

Prof. Geci is an Associate Professor coordinating the establishment of the Tayarisha African Centre of Excellence in Digital Governance, and hosting the African Civic Tech Innovation Network at the Wits School of Governance in South Africa. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Cape Town's African Centre for Cities, a Principal at the School of International Futures, and a global faculty member with Singularity University on the future of cities and governance. Geci holds Bachelors' degrees in Computer Science and Sociology (Iowa); Masters' degrees in Urban Planning and Architecture from UCLA (Los Angeles); and a PhD in Planning and Innovation Studies from the University of Witwatersrand (Johannesburg).

Some of Geci's recent projects include: Facilitating the Future of Data Governance in Africa (Pan-African cohort) for Omidyar (2021) and Futures of AI For Development (AI4D) for the IDRC (2022); Producing the report Possible Futures of the African Continent Post Covid19 Crisis: Science, Technology & Innovation for ICESCO (2021); and serving on South Africa's Ministerial Task Team on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (2019-2020). She is also co-author of the second AIS volume on African innovation, Innovation Ecosystems In Africa: Solving the Problems We Have (2023, Amalion).
